HMRC Launches Online Document Upload for Compliance Checks — What to Expect If They Contact You
Updated: Oct 24
HMRC modernises how compliance checks are handled
HMRC has introduced a new online service letting taxpayers and their appointed agents upload documents electronically as part of a compliance check, replacing much of the older postal and email exchange process. Compliance checks are a normal part of the tax system — they are not automatically a sign that you've done anything wrong.
Why the new upload service matters
Faster turnaround — documents reach HMRC's caseworker directly.
A clearer audit trail — both you and HMRC can see exactly what was submitted and when.
Less risk of lost paperwork — a common frustration with postal exchanges.
Agent access — your accountant can be given access to upload on your behalf.
What to do if a compliance check letter lands on your desk
Don't panic. Many checks are routine.
Don't ignore it. Deadlines are real, and missing them can escalate matters.
Contact your accountant promptly. Send us the letter as soon as it arrives.
Use the upload service where offered.
Keep to the stated deadline, or ask for an extension in writing if genuinely needed.
We handle this for clients across Bury, Greater Manchester and Lancashire every year
As ACCA-qualified accountants, we support SME clients through HMRC compliance checks of all kinds.
FAQ
